Bitter apple (Sage), Salvia officinalis L. (Labiatae) is collected during its flowering period and its leaves are dried in the shade. It is a perennial, shrubby plant with simple leaves and purplish-blue flowers, found wild in Central Europe and the Western Balkans, growing 50-100 cm tall. It contains tannins, (1-2.5%) essential oil, and bitter substances. It is obtained by steam distillation from the leafy and flowering branches of the S. Fruticase Miller species. It is recommended for external use by mixing with jojoba oil or olive oil. It is found wild in Central Europe and the Western Balkans. In Turkey, it is rarely cultivated in gardens.
